The law surrounding drug offences is contained in the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 and can be incredibly complex. Controlled drugs are generally split up into three classes:

  • Class A drugs include heroin, ecstasy, cocaine, methadone, LSD and magic mushrooms;
  • Class B drugs include cannabis, amphetamines, barbiturates, codeine, mephedrone and some synthetic cannabinoids;
  • Class C drugs include tranquilisers, ketamine, anabolic steroids, GHB and benzyl piperazines
